The Museums Commission held a virtual open talk on how rapid technological advances are reshaping contemporary artistic practices.

Titled “Art Futures: A New Space for Human Creativity,” the discussion explored the impact of technology on artistic expression and the ways creative works are produced. It also examined the role of cultural institutions, training programs, and artist residencies in supporting talent and developing artists’ practices.

The session explored the shifts that have led a growing number of young artists to embrace new media art, as well as the new possibilities for artistic production offered by digital technologies, virtual reality and AI. It examined how technology is reshaping the relationship between artists and their tools, expanding opportunities for experimentation and creative expression.

Participants discussed the importance of training programs and artist residencies in developing artists’ skills by providing specialized environments that bring together mentorship, experimentation, production, and research, while offering access to laboratories and advanced technologies. Such programs help turn emerging artistic experiments into mature, sustainable practices.

The discussion also spotlighted international experiences as models for nurturing talent and developing multidisciplinary artistic practices.

Participants explored how such international experiences could inform the development of a sustainable Saudi ecosystem for art futures, bringing together education, production, artist residencies, research and exhibitions. Meanwhile, the discussions highlighted the need to preserve cultural distinctiveness and local identity while strengthening the integration of art, science and technology.

The talk concluded with an examination of the future relationship between people, art and technology and the changes that may shape artistic practices in the coming years as AI, extended reality and interactive technologies continue to advance rapidly. It emphasized the importance of keeping human ideas at the heart of the creative process.
