Iran says ready for ‘fair’ deal after talks end without agreement

TEHRAN — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Sunday that Tehran is ready to reach a “balanced and fair agreement” to ensure lasting peace and security, following talks with the United States that ended without a deal.

Pezeshkian made the remarks during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Tasnim News Agency, as both leaders reviewed regional developments after negotiations in Islamabad.

The talks between Iranian and US delegations, mediated by Pakistan, concluded after around 21 hours early Sunday without a breakthrough.

The Iranian president said “double standards” by the United States remain the main obstacle to an agreement.

“Iran is fully prepared to reach a balanced and fair agreement that guarantees lasting peace and security in the region,” he said, adding that a deal is possible “if Washington adheres to international legal frameworks.”

Putin, for his part, criticized Western policies and stressed the need to respect Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also voiced support for Iran’s demands, including compensation for damage caused by recent military strikes and the need for long-term security guarantees.

The Islamabad talks were part of broader efforts to end the conflict that has killed more than 3,300 people since Feb. 28, before a fragile two-week ceasefire was brokered earlier this week.

Since the start of the war, Iran has also restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global route for oil and gas supplies.
