Google and Samsung cast their gaze over AI eyewear

Google and Samsung Electronics recently provided a glimpse of a pair of smart glasses designs set to be released in certain markets later on in 2026. The wearables are expected to heavily promote new AI features.

Details on the models were released at Google I/O 2026 on the 19th of May. The designs were created in partnership with spectacles brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

Google refers to the range as intelligent eyewear, asserting the products combine AI and everyday wearability.

The glasses are designed to pair to a mobile phone and use the Android XR platform built by Google, Samsung and Qualcomm.

Google explained there are plans to release two types of smart glasses. One iteration will provide spoken help in a user’s ear, while the other will present information in the field of vision. Both will connect with AI service Gemini.

The version with audio support is to launch first.

Among the applications Google cited as benefits are the ability to find reviews for restaurants as a user passes them, having the contents of a text message read out on the move, real-time translation and remote operation of an embedded camera.

    Vision statements

In its statement, Samsung EVP and head of customer experience office in its Mobile eXperience division Jay Kim hailed the intelligent eyewear as “an important step” in its “vision for AI”.

“With this new AI form-factor, we are further expanding the Galaxy device ecosystem, where each device is optimised to deliver unique AI experiences that best fit each form.”

Google VP and GM of Android XR Shahram Izadi added the devices are “a powerful step forward in our shared vision with Samsung to make AI more helpful and accessible in everyday life”.

Although Google was one of the smart eyewear pioneers with the launch of its Google Glass more than a decade ago, the form-factor failed to gain traction at the time and it eventually discontinued the last of the range in 2023.

However, general technology advances since mean the sector is in something of a resurgence.

In February, Counterpoint Research reported global smart glasses shipments had risen 139% year-on-year in H2 2025. Meta Platforms led with an 82% market share, driven by its Ray-Ban range released in partnership with eyewear giant Luxottica.
