Former Saudi national football team captain Sami Al-Jaber affirmed that Saudi Arabia has become one of the most frequent qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup™ finals in recent decades, having participated in seven of the last nine editions of the tournament, a journey that began most notably at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, when the Green Falcons made their debut and reached the Round of 16.

In an interview with the FIFA podcast, Al-Jaber recalled memories from that generation, noting that his World Cup dream began while watching the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, following stars from Brazil and France, including Michel Platini, and later going out to play, imagining himself as a Saudi national team player in Mexico City.

Al-Jaber explained that the dream grew until it was realized at the 1994 World Cup, after he played a key role in the qualifying campaign, including scoring in the 4-3 victory over Iran that secured Saudi Arabia’s place in its first-ever World Cup finals.

He spoke about the strength of Saudi Arabia’s group at the 1994 World Cup, which included the Netherlands’ golden generation, featuring players such as Ruud Gullit and Marc Overmars, Belgium led by Enzo Scifo, and Morocco, which had many players competing in the French league.

He noted that the Saudi team exceeded expectations in its first appearance, defeating Morocco through a goal scored by Al-Jaber himself, before achieving a historic victory over Belgium with Saeed Al-Owairan’s goal, reaching the Round of 16 in an achievement still remembered in Saudi sports history.

Al-Jaber is considered one of the most prominent figures in Saudi football, having played in four consecutive World Cups and helping his generation establish the Saudi national team’s presence on the world stage.
