RIYADH — Saudi Arabia strongly condemned Iran’s reported attack on the Saudi vessel Wadiyan and the Qatari vessel Al Rekayyat while they were transiting the Strait of Hormuz, describing the incident as an assault on international maritime security and global energy supplies.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attacks constitute a serious threat to the safety and security of international navigation and the stability of global energy markets.
“The Kingdom affirms that Iran’s continued attacks constitute a grave violation of international law, international norms and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which guarantee freedom of navigation and the safe passage of vessels through international waterways,” the ministry said.
Saudi Arabia called on Iran to immediately cease all actions that threaten regional security, international maritime navigation and global energy supplies, adding that Tehran bears full responsibility for the attacks and all resulting damage and consequences.
Earlier, Qatar also condemned the reported attack on the Qatari-owned LNG carrier Al Rekayyat near the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement posted on X, Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari described the incident as “an unacceptable attack on the security and safety of international maritime navigation.”
He said the attack threatened global energy supplies and amounted to “a grave and explicit violation of international law,” particularly the rules guaranteeing freedom of navigation and safe passage through international waterways.
“We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately cease all practices that undermine regional security or threaten the safety of international maritime navigation and refrain from endangering global energy supplies and the resources of the countries of the region in pursuit of narrow interests,” Al-Ansari said.
He added that Qatar holds Iran “fully legally responsible” for the attack and for any resulting damage and consequences.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports from Gulf producers.
