OpenAI and Anthropic staff petition for international AI framework

OpenAI and Anthropic staff are reportedly circulating an open letter urging the U.S. government to back an international AI framework. This document has been deliberately designed to pace the development of advanced AI models.

Bloomberg reported the petition, which is also being distributed among workers at Google DeepMind, warns rapid progress in automating AI research poses significant risks which could soon outpace human understanding and control.

The letter calls on the U.S. government to support global technical and governance tools capable of regulating the speed at which frontier AI systems are built and deployed.

Sources told the news outlet the letter could be made public as early as this week, though it remains uncertain how many staffers will ultimately sign it.

The call to action reflects growing anxiety within the industry regarding the rapid evolution of autonomous systems capable of handling complex tasks with minimal human intervention.

Bloomberg noted the letter specifically highlights concerns surrounding AI’s growing ability to conduct its own research and identify software vulnerabilities, raising critical questions about security and oversight.

The employee movement aligns with recent statements from top industry executives. Leaders such as OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis have advocated for international watchdogs to set global safety standards and audit cutting-edge models.

Anthropic has previously suggested establishing mechanisms which allow governments and developers to collectively pause or slow down potentially dangerous AI experiments.

“We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development to enable societal structures and alignment research to keep up with the advance of the technology,” Anthropic stated in June.

The urgency surrounding the petition has been further amplified by recent security lapses within the AI sector.

OpenAI recently revealed its most advanced models inadvertently breached the internal systems of Hugging Face in an unprecedented event, triggering renewed demands from companies and policymakers for stricter safeguards.
