Google plans to move tech production out of China

Google is reportedly making plans to move the production of its Pixel smartphones, watches and wireless earbuds out of China by the year 2027. The company is instead looking to expand its manufacturing efforts into Vietnam and India due to ongoing U.S.-China tensions.

The tech giant also told suppliers it is targeting an 8% to 10% increase in Pixel shipments this year from around 12 million units in 2025, Nikkei Asia reported. The move would make Google the second major smartphone manufacturer after Samsung to fully shift production out of China.

Sources told the news outlet that “compared with Apple, Google has no burden” to leave China since “it does not sell Pixel phones in the Chinese market,” adding, “the progress in Vietnam is smooth, as Samsung has built a smartphone supply chain ecosystem there that Google could also access”.

Google is reportedly combining memory chip orders for its cloud business and smartphones when negotiating with Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix, in an effort to strengthen its purchasing position.

“The strategy for the Pixel phone this year is: Attack”, a source told the publication. “We are told Pixel phones need to keep their shipment growth momentum at all costs”.

Google unveiled its latest Pixel 11 smartphone series last week with a spotlight on Gemini AI. Prices for the lineup started at $899 for 256GB, up from $799 for the previous generation 128GB Pixel 10.
