The Heritage Commission has concluded the fourth season of its archaeological excavation project at the Al-Ma’mala site in Al-Baha Region, as part of ongoing efforts to preserve the Kingdom’s national heritage and archaeological and architectural diversity.
Al-Ma’mala is considered one of the most significant archaeological sites in the region. It served as a center for the extraction of mineral ores, including gold, silver, and copper, as evidenced by archaeological remains and tools associated with extraction across different historical periods. The exploitation of these mineral resources transformed Al-Ma’mala into an important economic destination during the Islamic era, attracting a wide range of artisans and tradespeople, including metal merchants and laborers.
Samples collected from the site during previous excavation seasons indicate that mining activities date back to the pre-Islamic era. Laboratory analysis revealed that mining flourished from the late sixth century through the ninth century CE, spanning the period from the pre-Islamic era to the medieval Islamic period.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to continuing archaeological surveys and excavation projects across the Kingdom and strengthening mechanisms for documenting and protecting discoveries. These efforts aim to preserve the Kingdom’s cultural heritage and civilizational identity for future generations.
