Apple prepares for a major iPhone camera upgrade

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple could be preparing a significant AI upgrade to the iPhone camera app in its upcoming iOS 27 release. This launch would include a dedicated Siri mode as a new toggle alongside existing photo, video and portrait options.

The update could also involve moving the iPhone’s Visual Intelligence offering from the camera control button to the camera app itself, making the AI feature more discoverable.

Users will be able to point the camera at an object and access services such as ChatGPT to ask questions or run a Google reverse image search for additional information, according to sources.

Beyond integration into the camera, Apple is also expanding its in-house capabilities. One upgrade will allow the system to scan nutrition labels on food packaging to pull up detailed nutritional data.

A second camera feature will recognise printed phone numbers, addresses, or business card details and offer to add them automatically to a user’s contacts list.

On the hardware side, the news agency reported Apple is redesigning the experience with a new shutter button styled after the Apple Intelligence logo, replacing the traditional white capture button currently in use on Visual Intelligence.

The camera AI push is part of a broader Siri overhaul as Apple attempts to close the AI gap on rivals Google and Samsung.

Apple’s development of AI features for Siri has been troubled and plans to launch enhanced capabilities as part of iOS 26.4 in March ran into problems after testing in February revealed performance and reliability issues.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 27 during its WWDC developer conference on 8 June, 2026, with a public release targeting September alongside the new iPhone 18 lineup
