The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), has released the fifth edition of the Digital and Space Sustainability Report. The report aims to enhance transparency in sustainability, raise awareness, support informed decision-making, and attract investment, while showcasing Saudi Arabia’s efforts to leverage digital and space technologies to advance sustainable development and strengthen its global leadership in digital regulation and sustainability.
The report highlights Saudi Arabia’s most notable achievements in digital sustainability in 2025. These include Saudi Arabia ranking first globally in the ITU’s ICT Development Index (IDI), reflecting the strength of its national digital infrastructure in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also covers the Kingdom’s hosting of the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-25) in Riyadh under the theme “Regulation for Sustainable Digital Development”, the issuance of the Riyadh Outcome Statement, the launch of a comprehensive Global Toolkit for Policy and Regulation Practices for E-waste to promote the circular economy, Saudi Arabia’s joining the ITU Digital Regulation Network Board, strengthening its role in shaping digital standards that support sustainable development, and the launch of both the Earth Observation Platform and the “Shams” satellite for space and heliospheric monitoring and advancing space sustainability.
The report also showcases a range of pioneering initiatives led by CST and its partners across digital circular economy, space sustainability, regulatory capacity building, and international cooperation. In addition, it outlines future directions aimed at building a more sustainable digital and space future, supporting the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Furthermore, the report features 14 national success stories in environmental, economic, and social sustainability from more than 25 public and private sector entities. These stories demonstrate the application of advanced technologies, including AI, space technologies, and satellite-based Earth observation, highlighting the role of technology in addressing environmental and development challenges while creating lasting benefits for society and the economy.
