Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority recorded 12 rock hyrax births during the first quarter of 2026, reflecting the success of the authority’s breeding and environmental care programs and its ongoing efforts to enhance wildlife sustainability and increase populations of desert species in their natural habitats.

The rock hyrax is a wild mammal adapted to mountainous and rocky environments. It inhabits highlands and rugged terrain, taking shelter in rock crevices and caves. The species prefers elevated rocky areas that provide protection from predators and harsh environmental conditions.

The rock hyrax is distinguished by its robust body and short limbs, which enable it to move efficiently across rocks and steep slopes. It also possesses adhesive surfaces on the soles of its feet that help it traverse smooth rocky surfaces with ease and demonstrate remarkable climbing agility and speed.

The rock hyrax plays an important ecological role in maintaining natural balance by contributing to vegetation sustainability and supporting the food chain.

Efforts to conserve the rock hyrax are part of a national environmental system aimed at protecting wildlife and promoting biodiversity, in line with the Kingdom’s environmental objectives to ensure the sustainability of natural resources and preserve wildlife and natural habitats for future generations.
