Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau erupts, spewing rocks and volcanic ash

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano erupted overnight into Saturday, spewing rocks and volcanic ash as intense volcanic activity continued, the country’s Geological Agency said.

“As of today, September 5, 2026, at 4:40 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, the eruption is still ongoing, and rumbling can still be heard from the Krakatau Pasauran PGA Post,” the agency said in a statement.

Eruptions at the volcano have continued since July 2, when authorities raised its alert status to Level III, local media outlet Tempo reported.

The height of the latest eruption column could not be observed, but a bright red eruption plume was clearly visible.

MAGMA Indonesia, the country’s geological hazard monitoring platform, said seismic activity associated with the eruption was recorded from Friday morning, with a maximum amplitude of 33 millimeters and a duration of 14 seconds.

Three more eruptions were recorded Friday morning before activity temporarily subsided. Another series followed late Friday, with six eruptions recorded through 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

The Geological Agency said the activity resembled a “lava fountain” capable of producing lava flows, noting that continuous eruptions lasting several hours are common.

Booming sounds and vibrations were also reported in parts of West Java, Banten and Lampung at the same time as the volcanic activity and are suspected to be linked to Anak Krakatau, the agency said.

Authorities said the volcano’s growth since its major eruption on Dec. 22, 2018, remains relatively limited and that there is currently no potential for a collapse large enough to trigger a tsunami.

Indonesia sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismically active belt where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are frequent.
