A medical team in Al-Wajh Governorate, in collaboration with the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Team at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Tabuk, saved the life of a patient suffering from acute heart and lung failure. The emergency intervention demonstrated the integration of the region’s healthcare system.

The patient arrived at the emergency department of Al-Wajh General Hospital suffering from severe chest pain and acute shortness of breath. Initial examinations revealed critical indicators requiring immediate medical intervention. She then developed acute respiratory failure, followed by a temporary cardiac arrest.

The medical team placed her on a veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) device to provide temporary heart and lung support. The intervention stabilized her vital signs and enabled her safe transfer to King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Tabuk to continue advanced treatment and care.

Tabuk Health Cluster said the intervention reflects the readiness of its medical teams, their rapid response to critical cases, and the effective integration among its healthcare facilities in delivering advanced specialized care, even in the most complex cases.

The ECMO Team also praised the efforts of the medical and nursing staff at Al-Wajh General Hospital, commending their swift response from the moment the patient arrived. The team emphasized that teamwork was the decisive factor in saving her life.
