Inzaghi, Mancini set for reunion as Al Hilal face Al Sadd in ACL knockout

JEDDAH — Simone Inzaghi and Roberto Mancini go head-to-head on Monday as Al Hilal take on Al Sadd in the AFC Champions League Elite Round of 16.

Both sides enter the knockout clash with strong continental pedigree, but Al Hilal hold the edge historically, losing just once in four previous knockout meetings against the Qatari side.

The Saudi champions will also draw confidence from their recent form against teams from Qatar, going unbeaten in their last seven matches (six wins and one draw), including a 3-1 victory over Al Sadd during the league stage, where they finished top of the West Zone standings.

Al Sadd, who advanced to the knockout stage after finishing eighth on goal difference, will need to overcome a difficult recent run against Saudi opposition, having lost their last four matches.

Speaking ahead of the tie, Mancini acknowledged the challenge but remained confident. “We have similar injury situations to Al Hilal,” he said, while also praising his counterpart. “Inzaghi was my player and a very good one. Now he is a successful coach.”

Al Sadd player Hassan Al-Haydos said the mood within the squad remains positive, adding that the team is approaching the match with high morale.

Inzaghi, meanwhile, emphasized the difficulty of the encounter and his respect for Mancini. “Monday’s match will be tough. I know their coach very well,” he said. “Mancini is my friend, we played together and he coached me. He is doing a very good job.”

The Al Hilal coach also addressed injury concerns, noting that knocks to Mohammed Kanno and Malcom were not fatigue-related, adding that the squad has enough depth to cope.

Inzaghi highlighted the importance of captain Salem Al-Dawsari, describing him as a key figure for the team.

Midfielder Sergej Milinković-Savić also stressed the significance of the match, admitting that past mistakes in recent editions must be corrected if Al Hilal are to go all the way this season.

With both teams aware that knockout football leaves no margin for error, the clash in Jeddah promises to be a tightly contested battle between two experienced sides chasing continental success.
