The first half of April 2026 has been marked by historic milestones for Saudi Arabia, showcasing a nation pushing the boundaries of science, securing its global logistical and energy resilience, and rapidly transforming its domestic quality of life.
Scientific Frontiers: From Artemis II to Gene Therapy
Saudi Arabia made global history by becoming the first Arab nation to participate in the Artemis program, successfully launching the “Shams” satellite aboard NASA’s Artemis II mission to monitor space weather. This technological leap was mirrored on Earth by pioneering medical achievements. King Faisal Specialist Hospital (KFSH) successfully implemented gene therapy for sickle cell disease and performed the world’s first single-port robotic living donor liver resection.
     Economic Resilience and Smart Urbanization
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia demonstrated remarkable infrastructure resilience when the Ministry of Energy announced the swift restoration of seven million barrels per day of pumping capacity through the East-West pipeline following recent attacks, ensuring the continuity of global supply chains. Domestically, the Kingdom’s urban centers are achieving global recognition. Eight Saudi cities were featured in the IMD Smart City Index 2026, with Riyadh advancing to 24th globally, Hail entering at 33rd, and AlUla marking the highest global improvement by jumping to 85th.
A Booming Leisure and Tourism Economy
The entertainment and tourism sectors are operating at unprecedented scale. The General Entertainment Authority reported over 89 million visitors in 2025, while Q1 2026 saw domestic tourism grow by 16%, generating SAR34.7 billion in spending. The landscape continues to evolve with the inauguration of the Black Gold Museum in Riyadh, the first museum dedicated to the intersection of oil and art, and the upcoming April 23 opening of Aquarabia Qiddiya City, the Middle East’s largest water theme park.
     The period by numbers:
79.9 Years: The new average life expectancy in Saudi Arabia, up from 74 years in 2016.
$6.48 Billion: The total value of 2,247 international health projects implemented by Saudi Arabia globally.
83.88%: The post-secondary education enrollment rate recorded in 2024, achieving near-complete gender parity according to UNESCO.
2.67 Million: The number of emergency calls efficiently handled by the Unified Emergency Number 911 across four regions in March 2026.
85%: The share of electronic payments out of total retail payments in 2025, representing 14.6 billion transactions.
SAR774 Million: The volume of industrial sector lending provided through FinTech companies in 2025, a 36% annual increase.
69: The number of administrative support professions newly added to the 100% Saudization mandate by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development.
22: The number of unique rides and experiences, including 4 world-record breakers, at the newly completed Aquarabia Qiddiya City.
1.2 Million: The number of “virtual pilgrims” tested in a massive Hajj transport simulation involving 3,000 buses across 15 routes.
550 Million: The number of roses produced annually during the Taif rose harvest season across 910 local farms.
The first two weeks of April demonstrate a period of practical advancement across Saudi Arabia’s scientific, economic, and urban domains. The launch of the “Shams” satellite and developments in specialized healthcare represent significant steps forward in domestic research and technology capabilities. Meanwhile, the swift restoration of energy facilities highlights the Kingdom’s capacity to manage infrastructure disruptions. Concurrently, steady growth in domestic tourism and the advancement of multiple Saudi cities in international indices illustrate the continued implementation of the country’s broader economic diversification goals.
