RIYADH — King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) hosted Saudi Nobel Prize-winning chemist Prof. Omar Yaghi on Thursday for a scientific discussion with students participating in the 2026 Mawhiba Research Enrichment Program.
The event was attended by KACST President and Acting Governor of the Research, Development and Innovation Authority Munir Al-Desouki, along with senior officials from the Kingdom’s research and innovation sector.
Yaghi reflected on key milestones in his scientific career, describing how he chose early on to pursue research problems that many considered impossible to solve. Despite skepticism from parts of the scientific community, he said he continued his work, leading to the discovery of a new class of reticular chemistry materials in 1995 and the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an achievement that culminated in his receiving the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
He told students that every stage of his career represented a new beginning, emphasizing the importance of approaching research with curiosity, continuous learning and a willingness to develop new skills regardless of previous accomplishments.
Yaghi also stressed the value of independent thinking, encouraging young researchers to develop their own scientific paths rather than imitate others. He recalled that many of his early laboratory experiments failed but said perseverance and a commitment to asking new questions ultimately led to important discoveries.
He said scientific progress depends on working in environments that encourage discovery and innovation, collaborating with leading researchers and taking advantage of opportunities that strengthen research capabilities.
The session concluded with an open discussion in which Yaghi answered students’ questions on scientific research, building an academic career, developing research and laboratory skills, and the role of passion and hard work in achieving scientific success.
