WASHINGTON — The United States carried out airstrikes on targets inside Iran after accusing Tehran of launching a drone attack on a commercial cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said Friday.

CENTCOM said US aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar sites, in response to an Iranian attack that violated the ceasefire agreement between the two countries.

A senior US official told Fox News that six US aircraft struck four targets along Iran’s coastline bordering the Strait of Hormuz and Qeshm Island.

President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that Iran launched at least four one-way attack drones at commercial vessels in the strategic waterway. He said US forces intercepted three of the drones, while the fourth struck a cargo ship, causing damage.

Trump described the attack as a “foolish violation” of the ceasefire agreement. Asked by reporters earlier about a possible US response, he replied: “You’ll find out.”

Vice President JD Vance later warned Tehran against further escalation, writing on X that “violence will be met with violence.”

“Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honored it. If they have disagreements about how the MOU (memorandum of understanding) is being applied, they can pick up the phone,” Vance said.

On Thursday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center reported that a cargo vessel had been struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman, damaging the ship’s bridge. The agency said no casualties or environmental pollution were reported.

CENTCOM described the Iranian attack as “dangerous behavior” and said the “unwarranted aggression” constituted a clear violation of the ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported that an explosion was heard in the city of Sirik in Hormozgan Province, overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, but provided no information on its cause.
