Trump intervention helps overturn Balogun suspension before Belgium match

SEATTLE — FIFA has lifted the one-match suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun ahead of Monday’s World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium after reviewing the controversial red card he received against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a decision that followed intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Balogun, the United States’ leading scorer with three goals, was sent off in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina for stepping on the ankle of defender Tarik Muharemović, an incident that initially carried an automatic one-match suspension.

According to a person familiar with the matter, Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino after the match and urged the governing body to review the dismissal. FIFA announced on Sunday that Balogun’s suspension had been suspended for a one-year probationary period under Article 27 of its disciplinary regulations, making the 25-year-old forward eligible to face Belgium.

Trump welcomed the decision on social media, thanking FIFA for “doing what was right” and reversing what he described as an injustice.

The decision sparked a furious reaction from Belgium. The Royal Belgian Football Association said it was “astonished” and announced it was examining all available legal options to protect the integrity of the competition.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia questioned the unprecedented nature of the ruling, saying it was the first time he could recall such a decision during a World Cup and stressing that his federation was defending the principles of fair play.

U.S. players learned of Balogun’s availability while travelling to training in Seattle. Christian Pulisic said the challenge contained “zero intent” and argued that harsher tackles had gone unpunished during the tournament.

Balogun has been one of the United States’ standout performers, scoring three goals, including the decisive strike against Bosnia. The Monaco forward now has 12 international goals in 30 appearances after switching allegiance from England to the United States in 2023.

The United States is seeking its first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 2002 when it faces Belgium on Monday.
