    Dimitris Moulavasilis explains the clinical safeguards and ambitions behind M42’s AI-powered kidney health assistant

    Dubai — Kidney.com, launched by M42 and Diaverum in Abu Dhabi on 13 May 2026, marks a shift in healthcare AI from general-purpose generative tools toward specialised, condition-focused platforms built to understand medical nuance and strengthen patient engagement. Combining M42’s AI capabilities with Diaverum’s 35 years of renal care expertise, the assistant offers trusted, personalised kidney health education at no cost, launching first in the UAE, France, Germany, Portugal and the UK, with further markets to follow.

    More than 30 nephrologists, physicians and nurses across 13 countries shaped the platform’s clinical content, and over 14,000 chat interactions were completed during testing ahead of launch. Voice control, product label interpretation and multilingual support are among its features, with English, Arabic, French, German and Portuguese interfaces already live and more languages planned.

    Chronic kidney disease remains one of the costliest conditions for healthcare systems, with European costs estimated at €140 billion a year, while UAE prevalence sits between four and five per cent of adults and rises sharply with age. Dimitris Moulavasilis, group chief executive officer of M42, discusses the clinical rigour behind kidney.com, the safeguards essential to AI-powered health assistants, and the platform’s role in a wider shift toward preventative, AI-driven healthcare.

    How does kidney.com reflect the shift from general-purpose AI models to specialised, condition-focused healthcare AI platforms?
    Kidney.com reflects a broader evolution happening in healthcare AI — from general-purpose tools to clinically focused platforms designed around specific medical conditions and patient needs. Unlike broad AI models, kidney.com is trained in curated, evidence-based content and built with direct clinical oversight. By combining M42’s AI capabilities with Diaverum’s 35+ years of renal-care expertise, the platform delivers more relevant, reliable and personalised educational support.  

    For M42, kidney.com is part of a much larger shift toward scalable, prevention-first healthcare systems and reflects our ambition to build a globally scaled health intelligence ecosystem powered by AI, genomics, digital infrastructure and preventative care. 

     What role can conversational AI play in improving kidney health literacy, early awareness, and patient engagement?
    Conversational AI can make complex medical information more accessible, personalised and easier for people to engage with. In kidney disease, where many patients are diagnosed late, improving awareness and understanding is critical. Platforms like kidney.com allow users to ask questions in natural language and receive tailored, evidence-based guidance that helps them better understand risk factors, lifestyle choices and disease management. Better-informed patients are often more engaged in their care, which can improve adherence, encourage earlier intervention and ultimately support better long-term outcomes while reducing pressure on healthcare systems. 

     How has clinical expertise from nephrologists and healthcare professionals shaped the development and reliability of kidney.com?
    Clinical expertise has been central to the development of kidney.com from the beginning. The platform was developed with input from more than 30 nephrologists, physicians and nurses across 13 countries to ensure the content is evidence-based, clinically relevant and aligned with international standards of care. More than 14,000 testing interactions were completed prior to launching to help validate performance and reliability in real-world scenarios. This clinical oversight is essential because healthcare AI must be grounded in trusted medical expertise, particularly when supporting patient education and health-related decision-making. 

     What safeguards are essential when building AI-powered health assistants that provide personalised, evidence-based medical education?
    Trust and safety must be foundational. AI-powered health assistants should be built on curated, evidence-based medical content with strong clinical oversight and continuous monitoring. Clear guardrails are essential to reduce inaccurate or misleading outputs, particularly in healthcare settings. It is also important to be transparent about what the platform can and cannot do. kidney.com, for example, is designed as an educational tool that complements healthcare professionals rather than replacing them.

    Robust data privacy protections, regulatory compliance and responsible AI governance are equally critical to maintaining user trust and ensuring safe deployment at scale. 

     How do you see specialised AI platforms transforming preventative care and digital health access across global markets?
    Specialised AI platforms have the potential to make preventive healthcare more scalable, accessible and personalised. Many chronic diseases progress silently for years, often because people lack access to timely information and support. AI can help close this gap by delivering trusted health guidance directly to individuals in a simple and engaging way. Over time, these platforms may integrate with digital-health ecosystems, wearables and electronic health records to support more continuous, proactive care. Importantly, they also create opportunities to expand access to high-quality health education in underserved markets where specialist resources may be limited.
