One of Faizal Abdul Razak’s most vivid childhood memories involves a neighbourhood bakery in the bustling Satwa. “I remember when I was in high school, my mother would cook curry, put it in the fridge, and go to work,” he says. At around lunchtime, Razak would hurry to Sun Bakery to buy some bread, reheat it at home and use it to mop up the curry from his plate. Razak grew up in Satwa, flew the nest but returned, lured by its affordability, comfort and no-frills way of life. “I realised that all of my inspiration comes from this place,”…

Just metres beneath the surface off Fujairah’s coast, clouds of juvenile fish darted in and out of specially designed reef structures as divers descended to examine what one marine scientist describes as the culmination of a 25-year idea. For more than two decades, marine ecologist Dr Aaron Bartholomew carried around an idea he believed could change the way artificial reefs work. The concept first took shape during his PhD research in 2001, long before conversations about biodiversity loss, climate resilience, and nature-positive infrastructure became mainstream. While many artificial reefs were designed to attract large fish, Bartholomew was focused on a…

The traded missile fire marked the most serious confrontation since a ceasefire took effect in April. Israel and Iran exchanged strikes Sunday night and into Monday after Iran announced military operations in response to Israel’s air strikes on Beirut in…

Israel hit a petrochemical plant in southwestern Iran that it said was used to produce ballistic missiles, and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it retaliated with a strike aimed at a similar Israeli facility in the city of Haifa. Trump later said the countries were aiming for a ceasefire while he insisted a deal is close.…
